The Research
How can textile waste be repurposed for material?
I researched different methods of reusing textile waste and explored designs using couching, tying, and quilting.
Then, I did material studies which each style of reuse.
The Solution
Design a chair using quilted scrap denim.
Based on my initial sketches, I made sketch models of a chair with a quilted denim seat.
I used an "ergobox" to prototype different measurements for each dimension of the chair. I settled on the following dimensions for a lounge chair.
I experimented with several methods of joining the fabric seat to the wooden frame. Although I initially hoped to make the seat removable for washing, repair, etc. I found that I needed to fix it permanently to create an even tension across the seat.
Then, I 3D modeled the frame of the chair in Fusion360 to create a pattern for cutting the wood on a CNC router.
